Parish History
On September 12th, 1982, all the Catholics in the Seymour area met at the Sevier County Bank. Bishop Niedergeses, Bishop of Nashville, several priests and a number of people attended to establish a Catholic Community.
On March 12, 1983, Father Frank Richards, the Pastor of the newly formed Catholic community of Seymour, said the first Mass in a vacant restaurant on Chapman Highway.
From May 1983 to July 9, 1983, Mass was celebrated in the United Methodist Church in Seymour.
On July 9th, the first Mass was celebrated on the current site of Holy Family Church. CCD classes were held after Mass.
The First parish council was elected on March 12, 1984. On August 4, of that year, the groundbreaking ceremony for the current building was attended by Bishop Niedergeses, Father Richards, and other dignitaries. The Bishop gave the name of Holy Family to the newly formed parish.
On September 15, 1984 the first Women's Guild was organized.
On May 18, 1985, Father Charles Burton was assigned as the Pastor of Holy Family.
The dedication of the new church building took place on Saturday, June 29, 1985 at the eleven o'clock Mass with Bishop Niedergeses presiding.
In June 1987, Father John Dowling was assigned as Pastor of Holy Family.
Holy Family became a parish in the newly formed Diocese of Knoxville in 1988 when the diocese was established with Bishop Anthony J. O'Connell as its first Bishop.
In 1996 Father Patrick Garrity was assigned as Pastor.
In 1997 Father Thomas P. O'Connell, was assigned as Pastor to Holy Family Church
In 2001 a Knights of Columbus Council (Council 12961) was formed at Holy Family
On October 19, 2009 Our current Pastor Father Ragan Schriver was assigned to Holy Family |
